Backcloths Designed by Jonathan Ingham
From our research, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is set at the turn of the century during the reign of Czar Nicholas the Second, in the turbulent areas around Kiev.
Our set consists of figurative trucks placed against backcloths representing the colourful atmosphere of the region and its culture.
As well as a false proscenium that is fully adjustable in height and width, there are 3 backcloths and one full stage gauze provided. Also 2 gauzes that we are calling (for want of a better word) ectoplasm gauzes, for the nightmare sequence! These are 36’ x 17’6” arch shaped gauzes, painted with both UV and dye paint. They are not intended to be used as a UV scene but to be lit with a combination of UV and ordinary lighting, heightening the nightmare quality of the sequence. The backcloths and full stage gauze measure 36’ x 17’6” approx.
All units are trucked. The height of the house unit is 11’ at it’s tallest. The bed unit is also trucked.
The ground plans show the house trucks stored in a closed position upstage of the mid-stage cloth, however, it would always be possible of course, to store them in an open position if more depth is needed, bearing in mind this would necessitate extra moves on the scene changes.
PLEASE NOTE: Also provided with this set is Tevye’s cart, Motel’s Sewing Machine, the Star of David Wedding Canopy and the Bed Cover. The cart can be used with 2 or 4 wheels.
