Designed by Christopher Beeching
The set for Jack and the Beanstalk has a permanent false proscenium, comprising a pair of book-flats with entrances and a soft, lapped, border. It is thus fully adjustable in height and width. Upstage of this is a further pair of book wings which are permanent, having the Transformation Scene wings hinged to them.
The Cottage Interior's window on stage left is ungauzed, so that the beans can be thrown out of it. For the Transformation Scene, the Cottage wings fold back out of veiw. At the same time the Transformation Scene wings fold into view and the two cloths ( Cottage interior and Village backcloth) are flown out. The beanstalk grows and is climbable to a height of approximately 8 ft - depending upon the theatre's rig.
For the Giants Castle a large table is also provided ( not shown on the plans). The large plinth on stage right has a concealed opening in it for Jack ( or anyone else!) to hide.
Obviously, the flying plot can only be a suggestion for a pantomine, as it depends on which particular script is being used.
All cloths are 36ft at the bottom edge ( 38ft top edge) by 17ft 6 approx.
